0:00Hey. It's Mara. From Dell's.
0:05I know you're probably on the road. I know your dad's… I know. I'm sorry.
0:13Listen. I need to say this before somebody says it for me. The deposit bag is gone. Eighteen four. And it was gone before Dobbs pulled it [she said: pulled in]. I want that on the record. The bag was already gone when the truck came in, because Voss is going to tell you the truck came first, and it did not.
0:34I was carrying a Denver omelet to booth four when I saw the office door open. And Dell does not leave that door open. Your father has never once, in eleven years, left that door open.
0:46Teo was on the flat-top. Harlan was in four, like always, working on that pie like it owed him money. And the clock over the register said quarter to two. Quarter to two. Write that down.
0:58I'm not calling because I'm scared of Voss. I'm calling because I'm scared of you believing her before you talk to me.
1:04Call me back. Don't call the diner. Call me.

What do you do
Your move
You save the voicemail. Then you save it again, to the other place, the way she taught you to back things up the summer you worked the counter. Quarter to two. You write it on your hand.
Don't call the diner, she said. You look at the number she called from. It is the diner's landline. She was standing at the register when she told you not to call the register.
You play it again with your thumb on the screen. Pulled in. Not pulled it. The phone heard an accusation. Mara only said a truck arrived. You do not know who Dobbs is yet. You know the machine already has an opinion about him.
The photo says 2:14. The voicemail says 1:47. Twenty-seven minutes is a long time to hold a Denver omelet.
Whose chapter do you want next
Chapter two is Teo's. He has not said a word yet. It arrives when enough of you ask.
Tell Jeff you want it. One tap writes the message for you.
Written and built by Jeff Signor with some very smart frontier agents.
